The most famous is of course is Odin, the Allfather that can change into whatever being he wishes as he travels through the nine worlds. Loki is also a notorious nordic shape-shifting god, a two faced trickster, unpredictable, and not to be trusted. Many warrior tribes would relate with a ferocious animal and identify their fighting style with that animal. Wolves, bears, and the boar are the most prevalent. Berserkers transform into the bear, ulfhednar transform into the wolf. Shape-shifting could also be a curse. An example is seen in the sagas, where the greedy dwarf Fafnir kills his father to steal the magic gold seeking ring. The ring is cursed and he transforms into a dragon guarding his mound of treasure, he is later slain by the hero Sigurd. The werewolf is also a shape-shifting legend that has survived millennia derived from Northern Europe. Proto Germaic -wira-wulfaz (’man-wolf’), Old High German -werwolf.
