Toronto Zoo Sumatran Tiger - Action Indonesia Day

The Toronto Zoo is home to two Sumatran tigers. They are the smallest of the six tiger subspecies and the only living island tiger. These elusive cats are critically endangered with an estimated 400 left in the wild and less than 400 in captive breeding programs around the world. Their presence in Toronto helps tell a story of habitat loss, poaching, and human conflict. Harimau Kayu (Hari) is our soon-to-be 12-year-old male. He weighs 125 kg (275 lbs) and is known for his laid back demeanour, his sensitivity to unfavourable weather, and his love for enrichment. Kemala is our 13-year-old female. She weighs 77 kg (170 lbs) and is known for her intelligence, her soul piercing stare, and her desire to obtain control over every situation. The stripes of a tiger are imprinted on both their skin and fur. This pattern is unique to each individual and is the equivalent of a human fingerprint.
