Missy Franklin Breaks 200m Backstroke World Record - London 2012 Olympics

USA’s Missy Franklin sets a new world record of 2: to win gold in the women’s 200m backstroke event in the Aquatics Centre as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games (3 August). Russian Federation’s Anastasia Zueva won silver in the event with Franklin’s compatriot Elizabeth Beisel claiming bronze. Backstroke was added in 1904. In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne.
