Peters Corporation, Glendale, NY rental catalog Allow me to introduce to you all LEONIDAS LEONARD ( Leon Leonardi, or Leonid Leonardi)! Leonidas Leonardi was a pupil of Maurice Ravel. Maurice Ravel’s orchestration for Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition“ was a tremendous success back in 1923. W. Bessel & Co. Paris, publishers of Mussorgsky’s music, wanted something to strike back and so they approached a precoscious 21-years-old pianist named Leonidas Leonardi who was studying orchestration with Maurice Ravel himself at that time. Leonidas Leonardi obliged to orchestrate the work. He dedicated his orchestration to Igor Stravinsky, and conducted the premiere himself with the Lamoureux Orchestra in Paris on 15 June 1924. The US Premiere took place when the New York Symphony Orchestra performed it on 4 December 1924 under the baton of Walter Damrosch. In spite of that, the Leonardi version has remained an obscurity eversince, and NO recording exists for it! Only conductor Leonard Slatkin “revived“ Leonidas Leonardi in the early ’90s, and he used in his first compilation (of “Pictures at an Exhibition“) an excerpt of Leonardi’s orchestration (Promenade III & Tuileres).
