Selected scenes from Victor Sjöström’s Love’s Crucible (aka Mortal Clay / Vem dömer, Sweden 1922). Here we get to witness a trial by fire, from the earliest preparations right to the actual horrifying event, all set to Mgla’s (Mgła) nihilistic anthem (or should I call it anti-anthem?). 🎞️ At the end of the middle ages, Ursula is accused of having poisoned her own husband, who she never loved and was forced to marry. She claims she is innocent, but to prove it, she must submit to a ritual: trial by fire, walking on fire along a path leading directly to a crucifix.
