£1,500 Reward Offered for Information on Sycamore Gap Tree Vandalism

A pub in Northumberland is offering a £1,500 free bar tab to anyone who can help crack the case of who chopped down a famous Sycamore tree that featured in the Robin Hood film. The tree, known as the Sycamore Gap Tree, was located on National Trust land in Hadrian’s Wall National Park. It was a popular tourist destination and was thought to be over 400 years old. On 18th September 2023, the tree was found to have been chopped down overnight. The vandals had used a chainsaw to cut the tree down at its base. The National Trust has condemned the act of vandalism, calling it “a senseless and destructive act.“ The Trust’s chief executive, Hilary McGrady, said that she believed the tree had been deliberately targeted. “We believe that this was a deliberate act of vandalism,“ she said. “The tree was cut down in half an hour in the dead of night.
