The origin of the movie “Blade Runner“ can be traced back to the early 1970s when British author Philip K. Dick wrote the novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?“ The novel, published in 1968, is a science fiction story set in a post-apocalyptic world where most animal species are extinct, and androids known as “replicants“ are created to serve humans in off-world colonies. The novel explores themes of identity, empathy, and the blurred lines between artificial and human life.
In 1977, producer Michael Deeley acquired the rights to the novel and began developing a film adaptation. He partnered with the American film production company The Ladd Company, and the project caught the attention of influential director Ridley Scott, who had gained recognition for his work on “Alien“ (1979) and “Blade Runner“ (1982).
