Ukrainian protesters ask EU leaders to speed up Ukraine’s accession outside the European Council

Dozens of Ukrainians held Thursday a demonstration in a show of solidarity with Ukraine, demanding more European support for the country’s military forces as EU leaders gather for a two-day summit in Brussels. At the meeting in the Belgian capital, the 27 European Union states will discuss to protect their eastern flank from Russian aggression and beefing up Ukraine’s defense capabilities. The presence of NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address the meeting. Protestors called on EU leaders to beef up the military support to Ukraine and to speed up Ukraine’s accession to NATO military alliance. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said on Thursday (June 29) she was “optimistic“ that the talks on Ukraine’s accession to the bloc would start this year. “This parliament is clear that accession negotiations should start already this year, so our hope would be that the December European Council will be the place or the time where that step can be taken“, as she said at a press conference.
