February 1987, a restyled Sierra arrived with a four-door saloon added to the range marketed in the UK as the Sierra Sapphire. The front end was completely revised, with the biggest difference of the indicators positioned above the bumper and to the side of a new headlight design. The side windows were made slightly larger with sharper corners to increase visibility. The new rear lights were slimmer but wider lenses containing separate stop lamps. The saloon got the same rear lights as the revised hatchbacks. The rear end of the estate never changed during the Sierra’s lifespan. The interior was also updated. Also new to the range was a new 1.8 litre “lean burn“ petrol engine, which proved to be one of the most popular choices in the Sierra range.
