Edward Elzear “Zez“ Confrey (1895-1971) was the inventor of the “novelty“ piano style which evolved out of ragtime. Confrey’s novelty style can be described as being something between the more “conservative“ ragtime style popular around 1895-1920 and the faster and more “racy“ stride style that eventually replaced ragtime after 1920.
