“Stump” Fortress Masada, Dead Sea, Israel. Ancient Defense, 1st Century BC, “rediscovered” 1838

Howdy ya’ll. Today we’re going to be looking at the immense and ancient fortification in Israel known as Masada. This fortress has a history dating back to the 1st Century BC, and yet, excavations only began in the middle of the 20th century. This location, of biblical significance, was considered lost until roughly 1838, and I could find no photographs from the 19th century of Masada. I believe we must ponder the exact narrative we’ve been presented with. This structure, or series of structures, sits atop an ancient plateau, resembling what many call “a huge tree stump”.
