Inspiring Innovation: Arts Education in American Schools

About the speaker: Susan Murphy is an educator and artist who spent nearly 30 years teaching theatre, acting, and performance on the secondary level in the New Jersey City Public Schools. In the decades since having completed her BFA at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Susan divided her time between the stage and the classroom, developing an approach to arts training that relied on the reciprocity of both. In 2012, she received a Masters in Education at Saint Peter’s University. Also a performer, writer, and producer, Susan recently developed her original piece, Girl/Group: A Daughter’s Tale, at the world-renowned La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York. Girl/Group is currently in development as a limited series. In June of 2024, Susan retired from full time position in the public school classroom and is currently serving as a consultant and coach to various schools, organizations, and individual students and performers.
