The Birth of the Sun - A Key to Understanding Its Secrets
The sun is the greatest object in the solar system and is located at its center. It is approximately 109 times the diameter of the Earth and contains 99.8% of the solar system’s mass; one million Earths could fit within the sun.
The sun’s surface is roughly 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5,500 degrees Celsius) hot, but its core, heated by nuclear processes, can be over 27 million Fahrenheit (15 million degrees Celsius). According to NASA, 100 billion tons of dynamite would need to be detonated every second in order to produce the same amount of energy as the sun. The Milky Way contains more than 100 billion stars, including our sun. It completes a full orbit 25,000 light years out from the galactic center.
