Gaza Vaccination Campaign To Combat Deadly Polio Outbreak

The threat of a deadly polio outbreak in the Gaza Strip has prompted aid groups to call for an urgent ceasefire to ramp up vaccinations. One case has already been confirmed, while others are suspected after the virus was detected in wastewater at six different locations in July. The polio virus was eradicated in Gaza 25 years ago, but vaccinations have plunged since the war began 10 months ago, turning the territory into a breeding ground for the virus, according to aid groups. Hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians are crowded into tent camps lacking clean water and proper sewage and garbage disposal. To avert a widespread outbreak, aid groups are preparing to vaccinate more than 600,000 children in the coming weeks. However, they say these ambitious vaccination plans are impossible without a pause in the fighting between Israel and Hamas.
