The Matra V12 was designed by engineer Georges Martin, who joined Matra Sports in 1966. The engine was a four-stroke, water-cooled, all-aluminium, 60° double overhead camshaft V12 with a seven-main-bearing crankshaft. It produced between 395-520 hp and 198-253 lb⋅ft of torque. The engine was first used in the Matra MS11 car in 1968, driven by Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Henri Pescarolo. The engine also powered the Tyrrell-run Matra MS10 car, which competed alongside the works team and won several Grands Prix with Jackie Stewart behind the wheel. Stewart also won the drivers’ championship and Matra won the constructors’ championship in 1969 with the Matra MS80 car, which featured innovative structural fuel tanks. The Matra V12 engine continued to be used by Matra and other teams such as Shadow and Ligier until 1982, winning three more races and achieving many podiums. The engine also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times in sports car endurance racing. The Matra V12 engine is widely regarded as one of the best sounding engines in Formula 1 history, with its distinctive high-pitched scream.
