Daniel Barenboim & Berliner Philharmoniker – J. Strauss II: Emperor Waltz (Kaiser-Walzer) (excerpt)

This New Year’s Eve gala from Berlin’s Philharmonie in 2001 features a truly colourful and varied programme with Daniel Barenboim conducting from the podium and at the piano (Mozart: Rondo K. 386). Alongside well-known classics such as Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Flowers from The Nutcracker, Sibelius’s melancholy Valse triste and Johann Strauss’ splendid Emperor Waltz, there are two bonnes bouches from Barenboim’s Latin American homeland: Horacio Salgán’s tango for orchestra, A fuego lento, and the catchy, jazz-inspired Tico Tico. The Berliner Philharmoniker once again show audiences that there is no musical language in the world with which they are not at home. The audience’s enthusiasm at this gala persuaded the musicians to perform three encores before conductor and orchestra were allowed to leave the platform.
