MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Tennessee Lawmakers are advancing a plan to force parents to pay for their child’s bad seeds.
This plan comes amid a rash of juvenile crimes here in Memphis–everything from stolen cars to business burglaries.
Representative Brent Taylor is one of the sponsors of the parental accountability act.
It will allow juvenile court judges to order parents to pay restitution to law enforcement agencies up to $1K for every delinquent act after the first offense.
A mother in the Mid-South spoke with FOX13 and shared her thoughts about the proposal.
“Who can we hold accountable if not the parents? “ said Torsha Walker, Memphis. “I’m all for holding parents accountable for their children’s actions because why are 10,11, 12 years olds out late breaking into cars, smash and grabs. I do not understand.”The proposed bill passed the state senate, but still needs approval of the house and the governor.
