Damon Bailey was supposed to have been the next Larry Bird. Or at least that’s what Bobby Knight and the Indiana media tried to create out of an 8th grader more advance than his peers. Believe it or not, Larry bird may have even been Bailey’s floor of expectations, with a ceiling to be the new and improved great white hope from one of basketball’s most storied cities, Indiana. In my opinion 8th grade is too early to place those kinds of expectations on a prospect, as everything you could think of that could go wrong, has a chance to when you’re still just 14 years old. A lot of times it’s done by people that don’t quite understand the basketball journey and how hard it is to be 1 of just 60 each year to be drafted, and 1 of even fewer than that to live up to expectations. How many obstacles you have to hurdle, in and out of your control, and one misstep can mean things go a different way than planned. After watching him play Knight said that “Damon Bailey was better than any guard his Hoosiers had at the time. I don’t mean potentially better he says, I mean better today.”. Even though Bailey poker faced his expectations for the most part throughout high school, that sort of praise created nearly unattainable expectations.
