The origin story of the movie “The Warriors“ can be traced back to the 1965 novel of the same name by Sol Yurick. The novel was inspired by the ancient Greek story “Anabasis“ by Xenophon, which tells the tale of a group of Greek soldiers trying to make their way back home after being stranded deep within enemy territory.
In 1978, Walter Hill, a filmmaker known for his gritty and action-packed movies, acquired the rights to adapt Yurick’s novel into a feature film. Hill was drawn to the story’s themes of survival, loyalty, and the dynamics of gang culture.
Hill co-wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of “The Warriors“ with David Shaber. They made some modifications to the story, updating it to a contemporary urban setting and incorporating elements of gang culture prevalent in New York City during the late 1970s.
