Throughout the Second World War, there were a number of German Generals who were responsible for war crimes against civilians. One man who was executed by the Soviets because of his involvement in war crimes was Adolf Hamann, a very experienced member of the German Army. Hamann had served in the First World War also, but during World War 2 he was the commander of a number of occupied cities. Inside of these many civilians were executed by the Germans and Hamann was considered responsible for this. But following his capture he and 50,000 German soldiers were shamed by the Soviets. They were paraded and marched throughout Moscow in front of crowds of thousands of civilians, and this must have been a great source of embarrassment for the proud military man. But then Adolf Hamann was sentenced to death for his crimes, and he was then executed on the same day that he was condemned, making the short trip to the gallows.
