All the hallmarks of his dynamic live shows are here, packed into one song: a dazzling mix of trumpet, singing, and vocalese, combined with a top notch band and a knockout guest performance from Skonberg. “We’re not trying to be shy and dip our toes in,” explains Benack, “we’re diving right into the deep end, leading off with a really strong track. “Bria, in her own right, she’s a superstar,” he adds. “She travels the world, she has great albums, and a great audience.” In A Mellow Tone builds on the playful duet format of Benack’s 2020 smash single “Social Call,” which brought a viral worldwide audience to the trumpeter-vocalist’s music. “It’s the sequel to ‘Social Call,’” he explains. “Of all the tracks from the last record, ‘Social Call’ resonated with people the most. That’s the one I get tagged on, in Instagram stories from the news in Venezuela, or someone in Indonesia playing the transcript.” In A Mellow Tone also kicks off the rollout for Benack’s newest LP “Third Time’s The Charm,” which builds on the signature style of his previous releases — the trumpeter-vocalist uses his fluency in a diverse set of genres to full effect, delivering a studio album with a live show feel. “This record is the maturation, the culmination of my journey to this point,” shares Benack, “and of everything I’ve been developing artistically, across my playing, singing, and writing. It perfects the formula I’ve crafted on my previous two albums. I tried to program it as if I were doing a two set concert. It has that New York kind of energy, being in the room at midnight at Smalls, or if you went to see me at Dizzy’s.
