Rhaenyra Targaryen is literally the story of an overly spoiled girl, a little tomboy who had no interest in marriage or children, and who ends up finding her way in what the duty of her statue and of her time imposed on her, and by starting a war in passing because, oopsie. Rhaenyra is a girl who often lets herself be dictated by her emotions (or as her father would say, her desires lol), who sometimes acts very naively, even stupidly, but not necessarily with bad intentions. Rhaenyra is the story of a queen who was probably not destined to become one, who had that morality quite ahead of her time, and a talent for badass dragon entries that we can’t take from her. Rhaenyra is the story of a spoiled girl who loses a lot (her mother, her brother, her best friend, even if she participated in this loss, her children, then her husband), only to lose everything in the end. Rhaenyra is not the story of a good or a great queen. It’s the story of a queen who tried to follow in her father’s footsteps, but failed because, well, Viserys, she has the blood of the dragon, right? She’s restless and chaotic, and in many ways she’ll be her own downfall. But it’s also the story of a woman who tried. Tried to impose, tried to rule, tried to live by her desires, tried to conquer her freedom, try, try. It’s the flawed story of a woman I’ve adored ever since I discovered her character in the books, long before the show, and the show has adapted her incredibly well to my liking, in all her imperfection, and Milly and Emma both did an amazing job with her character. I really care about this video, which is therefore mainly centered on Rhaenyra. I really enjoyed playing with the lyrics “I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King“ by first showing Rhaenyra who rejects marriage and motherhood, before completely accepting it and remaining the “King “ in both cases. I really wanted to focus the heart of the video on this idea, this idea that she rejected so powerfully these two possibilities of a future in her youth, before finally succeeding in finding happiness in being a mother and being a wife, and in doing so, keeping her position as “king“. 0:11 - 0:15 : “We argue in the kitchen about whether to have children, about the world ending” with Daemon trying to soothe Rhaenyra’s fears about being a mother one day and end liker her mother, which is fun that he’s the one doing that, since we know that he will be the father of three of her children, and him saying that the world is a tragic world for the “world ending” bit.
