The album faces the displacement and acceptance of moving to a new phase in life. Particular themes involve facing trauma of a loved one, making peace with death, and connection to a city environment - the psychogeographic effects on one’s inner life.  The recordings began around 2012: a series of chance collaborations with friend and drummer Stella Mozgawa of Warpaint, finding time to play together in London, Sydney and Los Angeles, in downtime during a tour. Initial sessions were recorded with Jon Hopkins’ collaborator Cherif Hashizume, the songs then being mixed by producer Ben Hillier, renowned for his work with Depeche Mode and Nadine Shah. How to Breathe opens with Falling out of Buildings, a contemplation about making sense of chan
