French bin crisis: Rats occupy Paris as garbage collector strikes continue
Thousands of tons of garbage were piling up on the sidewalks of Paris and other French cities on Wednesday.
The workers are striking over the Macron government’s proposals to raise the pension age from 62 to 64.
The overflowing bins and the stench of rotting rubbish bags outside his restaurant are forcing manager Deen James to put up patrons inside and away from his sheltered terrace.
James is also having to cut back on orders of produce and groceries to try and limit the waste he’s having to manage.
In Paris, garbage collectors and sanitation agents announced that they will continue striking “until at least March 20.“
On Wednesday, a joint committee of senators and lower-house lawmakers examines the contested bill.
Wednesday’s meeting is meant to find an accord on the final version of the text.
The Senate is expected to approve it on Thursday, as its conservative majority is in favour of raising the retirement age.
The strikes in France are part of widespread unrest in Western Europe about the economic situation.
