Egypt’s first railway built by China opened

The Cairo-Zayed Light Rail, built by Chinese firms, starts trial operations, marking Egypt’s first electrified railway. Attended by top Egyptian officials and the Chinese Ambassador, the event signals a significant transportation boost for Cairo. The project involves 22 Chinese-made train sets and aims to transport 360,000 passengers daily, easing Cairo’s traffic and improving connectivity. The railway, a flagship Belt and Road Initiative project, connects the old and new capital areas. Despite COVID-19 challenges, Chinese and Egyptian teams ensured timely completion. The trains, designed for Egypt’s desert climate, feature advanced technology for safety and comfort. Praised by Egyptian leaders and riders, the light rail signifies Egypt’s advancement and strong Sino-Egyptian cooperation.
