Why is Carrara marble considered the best marble for carving?

Sculptors have chosen Carrara marble for centuries. White is the most traditional color, but Carrara marble is not the only white marble. Fabrics, human skin, and other materials can be reproduced by working with the shadow and transparency in Carrara marble. But there are other reasons for its popularity for sculptures and carving: It is white with minimum veining. It is uniform and consistent. Its fine grain is good for creating sharp and fine detail. It can be honed or polished, and other types of finishes are possible. It is strong enough for making delicate pieces. Large slabs can be obtained to build big monuments. However, not every type of marble from Carrara is appropriate for carving. Some are too soft. Others might have too much veining, or they might not have the appropriate grain or color.
