18 | Sailing the Remote Islands of Fiji, Vanua Balavu and Makogai

We sailied Julia upwind to Fiji’s remote Lau group, and were rewarded with one of the most spectacular cruising grounds we have ever visited. Vanua Balavu’s Bay of Islands is filled with beautiful islets with perfectly calm anchorages and countless coves to explore. It is a dinghy sailing paradise. After an overnight passage to the seldom visited island of Makogai, we toured an abandoned leprosy quarantine station and a giant clam hatchery. Fiji’s natural beauty and welcoming people have impressed us at every encounter. Julia is a traditionally built wooden boat. She is constructed to the Ingrid design by William Atkin, and was launched in 1960.
