Trail camera footage taken from the 29th May, shows Fangio, the alpha male comfort-grunting at his infant. A close-up of his face reveals a wound on his nose with the most likely explanation being that he sustained this injury during a male-on-male fight with Max some time ago. Although Max did not appear in this week’s footage, previous footage has shown him with a lip injury from a male-on-male fight. Max moved into the group a short while ago.
For over two decades, baboons have been absent from this particular area in Kwazulu Natal due to being persecuted.
It has been noted that the baboon population in KZN is less that 10% of the expected baboon populations are highly fragmented and largely dependent on protected areas.
The chacma baboon (Papio ursinas) is listed as Least Concern in the Red List of Mammals (2016). However, this does, not give an accurate assessment of baboon populations in South Africa, the reason being that only a few studies conducted since 2004 have obs
