This gamelan originates from Central Java, Indonesia and is housed at UNE. Here, Dr Joko Susilo plays Ladrang Moncer in the Slendro scale, Patet nem mood. With a birds eye view, you can see the unique parts played by the instruments that make up a gamelan orchestra. The central melody called the “balungan” (skeleton) is played on the saron family and the slenthem, the gender and the bonang decorate the melody, the drum controls the tempo, the gong, kenong and kempul punctuate the melody and provide “rasa” (feeling). This was recorded at UNE on 29 of November, 2019 as part of the digitisation of the music collection, and the creation of digital teaching and learning resources.
