Taiwan has been hit by the strongest earthquake in a quarter of a century, with shocks from the temblor shaking buildings in the capital Taipei and leading to tsunami warnings along the coasts. The epicentre of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake is about 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of the tourist city of Hualien. It was followed by multiple strong aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 6.5. The earthquake caused landslides and rockfalls. Tilted houses and damage were reported in Hualien County and military troops were dispatched for disaster relief and to minimize damage.
