Tensions in Middle East flare; Netanyahu rejects Palestinian sovereignty post-war

’전선확대’ 중동 화약고 입장 차 보이는 네타냐후, 바이든 More than 25-thousand. That is how many people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since October 7th. Heavy clashes are continuing in Khan Younis, and though there are some calls for Netanyahu to make a deal with Hamas for the release of captives, the Israeli Prime Minister is rejecting it. He is also at odds with the U.S. regarding the post-war Gaza plan, opposing to a two-state solution. But conflicts are not only being seen in the Gaza Strip. U.S. forces are trying to deter Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea, while Israel is reportedly determined to escalate hostilities with Hezbollah if an agreement is not reached between the two. How are tensions in the Middle East region developing? For this, we invite Professor Park Hyondo from the Sogang Euro-MENA Institute. Welcome, Professor Park. We also have Doctor Aidan Hehir from the University of Westminster. Good to see you. (HEHIR) Q1. Over 25-thousand people have been killed in Gaza Strip since the start of the war, amid ongoing heavy clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians. How is the conflict developing on the Gaza Strip? (PARK) Q2. Over a post-war Gaza Strip it seems there are divided views with the U.S. supporting the idea of creating a Palestinian state while the Israeli PM rejects that idea. Could you tell us how their views differ? (HEHIR) Q3. If I am correct, Israeli, Palestinian and Middle Eastern foreign ministers will soon have a meeting with their European Union counterparts in Brussels. What meaningful developments do you expect them to come up with? (PARK) Q4. Let’s turn our eyes to Lebanon-Israel border. The Washington Post revealed on Friday that Israeli officials have threatened to escalate hostilities with Hezbollah if an agreement is not reached within the coming weeks. How are Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah’s views different from each other? (PARK) Q5. What would happen if war at the Lebanon-Israel border actually expands? (HEHIR) Q6. Moving on to clashes in the Red Sea Houthis have been assaulting commercial ships and the U.S. and UK militaries have been striking back against them, even targeting their bases in Yemen. First of all, what are the links the Houthis have with Iran and Hamas that make them continue such attacks? (HEHIR) Q7. As the tensions flare, the U.S. re-designated Houthis as Specially Designated Global Terrorists and EU member states have given initial backing to a naval mission to protect ships as well. How do you see the tensions escalating there? (PARK) Q8. Staying on the Houthis, they have been been exchanging strikes with the U.S. this has been disrupting maritime trade causing shipping delays. How much economic loss are we seeing? (HEHIR) Q9. Iran launched ballistic missiles at an Israeli “spy headquarters” in Iraq’s Kurdish region, hit targets in northern Syria, and though agreed to de-escalate tensions, exchanged tit-for-tat military strikes with Pakistan as well. Could you tell us how Iran has been launching such attacks? (PARK) Q10. Given that Iran launched ballistic missiles at Israel’s spy base in northern Iraq, and later on accused Israel of carrying out a strike on the Syrian capital Damascus --which killed four Iranian military advisers tensions between Israel and Iran are definitely growing. How do you see the chances of them directly being in conflict? Unfortunately, that’s all the time we have for today’s edition. Thank you Professor Hehir and Professor Park for your time and insights. We appreciate it.
