Palestinian woman with Israeli citizenship arrested on terrorism charges over her WhatsApp status

A Palestinian woman with Israeli citizenship was arrested in Israel on terrorism charges over her WhatsApp status, after the Israeli Knesset passed a new amendment to its counterterrorism law on Thursday which criminalises the “consumption of terrorism material”. This new amendment to Article 24 of the counterterrorism law bans the “systematic and continuous consumption of publications of a terrorist organisation under circumstances that indicate identification with the terrorist organisation”. The offence carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison. She is one amongst many Palestinian citizens of Israel who have been arrested, or suspended from their workplaces and educational institutions since 7 October.
