THE LAND OF MIGHT-HAVE-BEEN | Stephanie Trick & Paolo Alderighi
Ivor Novello was a Welsh composer, actor and playwright, and wrote scores for musical comedies and revues. (Incidentally, he collaborated on an English musical, “Theodore & Co,” with a young Jerome Kern in 1916.) In total, Novello wrote or co-wrote 14 plays, 8 musicals and more than 250 songs.
Novello’s first hit was “Keep the Home Fires Burning,” which resonated greatly with people especially during World War I, and he went on to compose other popular songs like “We’ll Gather Lilacs,” “And Her Mother Came, Too” and “The Land of Might-Have-Been.”
Novello was portrayed by Jeremy Northam in the 2001 film, “Gosford Park,” which also featured a handful of his compositions, including “The Land of Might-Have-Been,” which was written in 1922.
