Imagine you are up to your waist in the water or in a bog and someone throws you a rope. You grab the rope, but can you tie it around your waist one handed?! A U.S. Coast Guard service member showed me how to tie a bowline one-handed, because you just never know when you might need to be pulled back to solid ground!
