After a short break in Japan, heavy rains resumed, leading to devastating floods. More than 280 millimeters (11 inches) of rain fell in parts of Akita Prefecture, home to more than a million people, in the past 24 hours alone. Currently, the prefecture located on the island of Honshu has declared the maximum level of danger. Nearly 38,000 people have been ordered to evacuate immediately due to the flooding of the Taihei River. The capital of the prefecture, the city of Akita, as well as the cities of Noshiro, Gojome, Fujisato and Oga, were completely or partially under water. Numerous landslides have occurred in hilly areas due to soil erosion. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued orange warnings for heavy rain and landslides also for the neighboring prefectures of Miyagi, Yamagata and Fukushima.
