But I quickly found that of all the transcriptions I could find, there were none I agreed with. 2) Don’t get me wrong: a lot what Shuggy played here feels very improvised, so it’s perfectly okay for anyone to put their own spin on the licks if they play it — especially when covering it in a performance. 3) I, however, never intend to perform it in public. I only set out to learn something from it, and if I truly want to get a glimpse of the way Shuggy was thinking, I better try and play it as close as possible. So I had to take all the transcriptions there were and verify them against what I thought was happening, changing a lot of small and not so small details, ultimately creating a transcription of my own. So now there’s one more. 4) You may still disagree with how I interpreted the part, it’s okay. I used two different masters and the isolated rhythm section from Hot Rats Sessions to try and zero in on some of the parts I wasn’t sure about, but YMMV. 5) Also, there’s still a bunch of my own mannerisms in the way I articulate some of the notes, that’s inescapable. 6) I oscillated a lot between pick and fingers as I was learning the piece.
