Round table discussion “EAEU and ASEAN Economic Agenda: Overlapping Interests”

Date: November 21, 2023 Time and venue: 14:00 to 16:00 WIB, ASEAN Secretariat building, Jakarta (10:00 to 12:00, Moscow)/ Moderator: Dr. Nikita Kuklin, Expert, ASEAN Centre, MGIMO University This year marks the fifth anniversary of a relationship between the Eurasian Economic Commission and ASEAN established by the Memorandum of Understanding between the EEC and ASEAN on Economic Cooperation in 2018. Throughout these five years the relationship of both the individual EAEU Member States and the Eurasian Economic Commission with ASEAN has been rapidly developing. This is reflected in the growing numbers of trade turnover between the EAEU and ASEAN countries in the recent years. However in order to realize in the full scale the existing potential for cooperation between the EAEU and ASEAN both sides need to undertake a detailed analysis of each other’s economic agenda and define the areas of economic cooperation that look most promising for both parties. Such a thorough analysis could pave the way towards strengthening ties between the EAEU and ASEAN. Most importantly, identifying our overlapping interests can become a useful tool for strategic planning in both the EAEU and ASEAN for the period after 2025 and for defining avenues for the ASEAN-EAEU further dialogue. General questions for discussion: ● How does the EAEU define its economic strategy beyond 2025? What are the most promising areas for the international economic cooperation? ● How does ASEAN view its further economic development? What are the strategically important economic areas for sustaining rapid economic growth? ● What is the accumulated experience of the EAEU-ASEAN inter-institutional interaction, based on which the parties can develop further cooperation? ● What are the points of convergence in the EAEU and ASEAN strategic planning (key documents and strategies)? ● Which spheres of the EAEU-ASEAN cooperation may require further institutionalization?
