Toxoplasma - The mind controlling parasite

This weeks video looks at the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma Gondii. We look at how this organism uses the host such as the cat to reproduce in its gut, producing eggs called oocysts. These eggs are excreted in the faeces of cats, the eggs have good durability and can last as long as one whole year. They contaminate areas such as grass and water supplies, the eggs are then eventually ingested via the contaminated water by humans and rodents. The parasite then has a number of effects on the brain chemistry of both humans and rodents.
