Hood5six: Jeromes Dream 6/2/2023 TV EYE Ridgewood Queens, NY

How’s it goin? After a night of back to back Beatdown, we’re getting in touch with our emotions at TV EYE, and holding back our ugly cries for one of the greatest OG Screamo bands to ever do it. When I was frequenting blogspots for new bands to check out as a kid, the legendary Connecticut Screamo band Jerome’s Dream was always plastered all over the Skramz section of any Blog I was on. Along with bands like Orchid, I Hate Myself, , and so many more, Jerome’s Dream made their way onto my ipod classic, and I got to know their music a little better. Sure it was Screamo but it had the hallmarks of the earlier bands of the genre, before the genre took on prettier Midwest Emo qualities (to which I’m not opposed, but not what I was looking for at the time). Jerome’s Dream was always known for the dynamic in their sound, with a strong balance between the chaotic and the melodic. By taking cues from the originators of the genre coming out of the early 90s, as well as being a product of the late 90s during which Jerome’s Dream was founded, the band was able to make their own mark on the now well established Screamo genre. Their sound included influences from other style of underground music, such as Grindcore, Powerviolence, Noise Rock, and even Math Rock (much of what influenced the “Emoviolence/ScreamoViolence“ portion of the community). Although they weren’t a band who went for clean vocals (which I prefer usually), they more than made up for that with the pretty sounding melodic parts of their songs. I was excited to see to finally see the reunited Jerome’s Dream, especially at TV EYE where it’s mostly Punk shows, with some exceptions like the occasional Metal gig (very happy they’re diversifying). It worked out perfectly as a sizeable venue for Punks by Punks, which comfortably fit everyone for this sold out Skramz celebration. In true Punk fashion they took to the stage with no rock star fanfare or intro music like a WWE strongman about to get in the ring. The power trio of classic 90s Screamo just got up there, jammed a phenomenal set, and did very little talking, other than the usual “look out for each other“ stuff and giving thanks. It was everything and more delivered in under thirty five minutes, with no dumb peek a boo encores, or any of that nonsense. I’m a bit bummed their original guitarist Nick Antonopoulos decided to call it a day, as I would’ve loved to have seen Jerome’s Dream as a four piece, but Loma Prieta’s Sean Leary did a perfect job on guitar. The band sounded just as good as they did on their old records and VHS videos of their shows, if not better even. This is a reunion I highly advise you not sleep on. Get to one of their shows to support the greatness that is Jerome’s Dream and buy some merch while you’re at it. Big thanks to Jerome’s Dream for killing it and letting me get home at a decent hour.
