The 1950s-inspired collection pays tribute to French icons Catherine Dior, the couturier’s sister; Juliette Gréco, the singer and actress who was famed for wearing existentialist black and Édith Piaf. “These three women shared an independent spirit that guided their choice,“ revealed Dior in a post-show statement. The 1950s were an important chapter for Dior, because it was during these years that Christian Dior shaped the “New Look“. The majority of the 96-look collection was done in black, white, and gray save for brilliant blues, rebellious reds and some leopard prints. Floral motifs were once the favorite of Mr. Dior. The flowers were revised in an abstract way to grace the clothes. The house chose primary colors, from ruby to emerald, through topaz yellow and blue. Some of the pieces featured a map of Paris as a motif. Dior delivered a refreshing take on grunge for its collection. Models’ eyes were darkened with rings of smudged eyeliner. Designed by the Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, the show space for the Dior show, titled Valkyrie Miss Dior, was created as a tribute to Catherine Dior. It was inspired by the house’s archives and featured floral textiles.
