Saudi Arabia and Qatar Together Planning Something Big Against Israel

But, within hours of Hamas’s murderous assault on Israel, Saudi Arabia was condemning killings, demanding moderation, offering unwavering support for Palestinians, and desperately attempting to mediate one of the Middle East’s most intractable - and suddenly most volatile - crises.
The Saudi crown prince’s diplomatic pivot toward prosperity and growth over violence has spurred the kingdom to seek de-escalation of the escalating Israel-Hamas confrontation. It is willing to speak with all parties, but how much clout does it have?
According to the Saudi Press Agency, in the first such interaction between Saudi leadership and an Iranian leader in a decade, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman called with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Thursday to “address the present military escalation in Gaza and its surroundings“.
The contact with Saudi Arabia’s regional rival, an outspoken ally and Hamas supporter, underscored the kingdom’s commitment to “communicate with all international and regional parties to stop the ongoing escalation“ and its “rejection of targeting civilians in any way,“ according to the state-run SPA.
The crown prince “emphasised the kingdom’s unshakable stance in backing efforts aimed at reaching a just and comprehensive peace that guarantees Palestinians’ legitimate rights“ in the call, according to the agency.
Saudi Arabia’s active engagement in attempting to de-escalate the conflict between Israel and Hamas is a litmus test for the crown prince’s newly declared diplomacy-first attitude. A larger battle would jeopardise both the kingdom’s domestic economic success storey and its vision of a pragmatic region that prioritises development above old enmities.
As escalating shelling on besieged Gaza and an expected Israeli ground invasion sour the Saudi public’s mood toward cooperating with Israel, Riyadh aims to accomplish peace while also keeping the normalisation agreement alive.
That challenge grows more difficult by the day. According to Palestinian sources, 1,417 individuals have been killed by Israeli missile strikes in Gaza as of Thursday, including 447 children. Israel claims over 1,300 deaths, the majority of whom were civilians.
