Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone. Set thousands of years before . Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, this epic drama begins in a time of relative peace. The series follows some familiar and new characters, as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone. Cause and FX were one of only six VFX studios worldwide engaged by VFX Producers Ron Ames and Jesse Kobayashi to bring The Rings of Power to life. Initially tasked with assisting look development for the live edit, Cause contributed over 700 VFX shots as rapid turnaround temps, equipping the producers with opportunities for elevated storytelling prior to edit lock. Once final shot work commenced, Cause was entrusted with a vast variety of VFX work and problem solving across the series. VFX final work included CG FX; CG & DMP set extensions; layering of motion control passes; scale work including forced perspective of characters, environments and framing; in-camera augmentation of props, weapons and prosthetics; and complex multi-layered comps. Every shot came with its own creative challenges – sometimes requiring meticulous pixel-by-pixel adjustment, sometimes brute force – but always careful consideration in determining the optimum solution to maintain the scrupulous photo-realism of the show. The level of finishing was extremely high with a formidable focus on the smallest of details. Every element was vested with a considered purpose and motivation which culminates in a completely immersive experience for the viewer. This production engaged our comprehensive internal review and in-house QC processes and allowed our entire team the satisfaction of contributing their best to Amazon Studio’s iconic production. Cause and FX were entrusted with delivering the last sequence of the season. Patrick Junghans, Peter Baustaedter and Einar Martinsen of ROP VFX created the digital matte painting environment.
