At least 45 injured in Russian explosion at optics factory near Moscow

At least 45 people were left with injuries after an explosion took place at the Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Plant on Wednesday in Sergiev Posad, Russia — just 50 kilometres northeast of Moscow. Footage from various angles of the warehouse captured the immediate aftermath of the unexpected blast, showing a massive plume of smoke and surrounding high-rises with blown out windows. Emergency services said the plant contained pyrotechnic equipment and that at least 23 of those injured were hospitalized. Six individuals were put in intensive care, the Sergiev Posad mayor’s office said. It is currently believed that the explosion was not caused by a Ukrainian drone attack — despite attacks many have pinned on Ukraine in Moscow in recent weeks — the state news agency TASS said, citing local emergency services.
