Bread price-fixing by grocers in Canada was discovered many years ago, but it’s only now that regulators are imposing meaningful fines.
Canada Bread has been fined a record $50 million after pleading guilty to conspiring to raise the price of bread in 2007 and 2011.
Experts think one of the reasons why price-fixing happened in this instance was how easy it is, with a limited number of competitors in the market due to the consolidation and existing monopolies in the Canadian economy.
