More than 70,000 refugees have fled Karabakh for Armenia, says Yerevan
About 70,500 refugees have fled Nagorno-Karabakh for Armenia in a matter of days after Azerbaijan’s lightning offensive, according to Yerevan.
That is about 85 percent of the 120,000 ethnic Armenians who had lived in the troubled enclave until last week.
Over thirty years, tens of thousands of people were killed fighting for and against the self-declared state of Nagorno-Karabakh, but now its president has issued an order dissolving the administration.
In Armenia, the government must now try to accommodate this sudden unexpected influx of as many as 120,000 refugees.
Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith is in Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, where, he says, the mood is one of shock.
