LOCAL STORIES ON FOREIGN HEADLINES

한 주간 외신 속 한한 주간 외신 속 한반도 뉴스 Hello and welcome. You’re watching Issues and Insiders for this Wednesday. I’m Min Sunhee. Today I have our panel of foreign correspondents and their take on stories here that made foreign headlines as well. For this I have Nicola Smith live on the line. Nicola it’s good to see you again. I also have Chloe Borgnon with us. Chloe it’s your first time with us. Welcome to the show. 1-1) Nicola, South Korea has dismissed North Korea’s latest claims of an underwater nuclear attack drone testing. Now I believe you covered North Korea’s initial claim of such a test back in March last year. That being said, first of all, if true, what exactly are the implications of this new weapon? 1-2) Nicola, your coverage last year also included skepticism from pundits regarding North Korea’s claim. Do you care to elaborate? 2) Chloe, Ukraine says North Korea is currently Russia’s largest weapons provider. And this statement comes amid mounting security concerns in Europe, especially in light of remarks by Dutch Admiral Rob Bauer, the chair of NATO military committee who claimed war with Russia is on the horizon. How is this reality affecting France’s support of Ukraine? 3) Nicola, I hear defense authorities and pundits alike in the U.K. are also warning about war with Russia in the foreseeable future. What more can you share? 4) Chloe, let’s shift our focus now to more South Korea-centered news. I’m aware you recently covered our food waste recycling initiative, which has been in place for some 20 years. Do tell us a bit about your coverage, and what you learnt. 5) Nicola, Korea’s efforts to recycle food waste have been covered by other media as well including that in the U.K. What are the chances of a similar campaign over in the U.K. to reduce waste? 6) Chloe, also on the social front. Both Korea and France in recent days have shared plans to better tackle falling birth rates. What is the latest blueprint by French President Emmanuel Macron, and do you believe a similar plan here in Korea would serve to boost its birth rate? 7) Nicola, we briefly touched upon this next issue last week, and I’d like to revisit the subject. Concerns have been raised about the excessive public outrage that Korean celebrities are vulnerable to and the reality that some media take advantage of this reality. What are your thoughts, and what are the broader implications of this reality? 8) Chloe, what is your observation of the media exposure that Korean celebrities face here in Korea? All right. 반도 뉴스 Hello and welcome. You’re watching Issues and Insiders for this Wednesday. I’m Min Sunhee.
