The sound of the earliest bronze cast church bell - Applied Archaeometallurgy #medievalbellfounding

The bell of Canino is the oldest survivng church bell made from cast bronze. It is now in the Vatican museums, but its state does not allow it to be rung.
Dr. Bastian Asmus in cooperation with the Campus Galli open air museum in Messkirch, Germany, ran a series of experiments to recreate the oldest bronze founding method to make a such a bell. There is an early manuscript written by Zheophilus Presbyter that left us detailed description of how to make a bell in the lost wax technology. After three years and several castings the resulting bell finally met all requirements for a workig bell. For this bell a tawer was constracted and built; and now for the very first time we can hear the ringing of the bell, which was made exactly the same way as 1200 years ago.
