Although the principals are the same as today, pole-vaulting was very different in 1924. Athletes not only applied a very different technique - among other things holding the pole much further from the end than currently - safety equipment barely existed. The landing pit was much more similar to the sand pit found in long jump than the current foam-padded landing mats currently available.
