Another divisional opponent, the New Jersey Devils, came to town for the Penguins’ ‘80s Theme Night at PPG Paints Arena. The Devils got off to an outstanding start, with three goals before the game was seven minutes old: two from Bratt and one from Sharangovich. Mercer scored for New Jersey midway through the 2nd period, making it 4-0 in favor of the visitors. With space to make a play, Evgeni Malkin caught a pass in flight and broke towards the net, earning his seventh goal of the season. However, Severson scored for the Devils on the power play shortly after, and the teams headed into the 3rd period with the Penguins trailing 5-1.
