German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for diplomatic efforts to be stepped up to end the war in Ukraine. Historic gains by populists from both the right and left in recent regional elections have increased pressure on Scholz’s governing coalition on multiple fronts. The far-right party Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) and the new Sarah Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) have opposed weapons shipments to Ukraine.
